TURTLES

I remember riding down the street in the car with my mom coming from a friend's house that stayed off in the woods. As she would drive I would try to count how many trees we passed, an impossible task. Then, something would grab my attention down the road a little bit, a large bump off to the side of the road, barely moving. I begged my mom to stop, and she would pull over. I jumped out of the car and ran over to the strange bump and realized it was a turtle. With amazement, I picked up the turtle and ran back to the car with it-asking my mom ”Can I please bring it home?” I’d keep him or her for a week at home then drop it off at a new watering hole locally.

I did this for almost a decade with several turtles; relocating them. In my youth, I realized I could relate to those turtles; hiding in my shell among my peers. Now that I’m more mature and spiritually inclined I have learned the mystical significance of these special creatures. I painted a lone turtle back in 2021 to recognize them in my life. As I was reading an African healing book, they referenced North America as Turtle Island from Indigenous Cultures. This year, 2024, I created my first turtle sculpture as practice with art using clay medium.

According to my research turtles hold significant symbolism across various cultures and belief systems. Let's take a look shall we.

1. Longevity and Stability

Turtles are often associated with longevity due to their long lifespan and slow, steady pace. In many spiritual traditions, they symbolize stability and endurance, representing the ability to navigate through life's challenges with patience and resilience.

2. Wisdom and Knowledge

In some cultures, turtles are revered as symbols of wisdom and knowledge. Their perceived wisdom comes from their ancient existence and the way they seem to move deliberately through life. They are often seen as guardians of wisdom, guiding seekers on their spiritual journey.

3. Protection and Security

The hard shell of a turtle is a natural defense mechanism, providing protection from external threats. Metaphorically, this can represent the idea of creating boundaries and maintaining personal security in the face of adversity.

4. Connection to the Earth and Water Elements

Turtles inhabit both land and water, making them symbolic of the balance between different elements of nature. They are seen as intermediaries between the earthly realm and the spiritual realm, embodying harmony and interconnectedness.

5. Fertility and Creation:

In some cultures, turtles are associated with fertility and creation due to their ability to lay many eggs at once. They are often seen as symbols of Mother Earth and the nurturing aspect of femininity.

6. Transformation and Rebirth

Turtles undergo a remarkable transformation from hatchling to adult, symbolizing the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. They are often associated with transformational processes and spiritual evolution.

7. Spirit Guides and Messengers

In certain spiritual traditions, encountering a turtle is believed to be a sign from the spiritual realm. Turtles may serve as guides or messengers, offering insights and guidance to those who encounter them.

8. Patience and Adaptability

Turtles teach the virtue of patience and the importance of adapting to changing circumstances. Their slow and steady approach to life encourages mindfulness and perseverance in the face of challenges.

These are just a few examples of the rich symbolism surrounding turtles in various spiritual and metaphysical contexts. Different cultures may interpret their significance in unique ways, but the themes of wisdom, protection, and interconnectedness are commonly shared across many traditions.
